Reflection Project 3B

Pre-camp
o   What sounds interesting about this project?
The caffeine extraction was the first that caught my attention. I found it really interesting to actually try to extract caffeine and I was curious about the procedures to do that.

o   What do you think you can learn from this project?
For the caffeine I think I may learn some chemistry, like how the caffeine breaks down and how we can extract it from a few procedures that includes something like boiling of water or even filtering.

o   Any immediate questions regarding the project?
Nope~

First Day
-        What did you do today?
o   Briefly describe your day’s activities
The second project that we did was the extraction of the caffeine. Since we were unable to finish the whole of the second project b today, we only did a bit. We weighed the tea leaves and placed it in bags and it was going to be used to extract the caffeine tomorrow.

-        What did you learn today?
o   Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
Today, I learned that it was dangerous working in labs and therefore we have to wear our lab coats, gloves and goggles at all times. I learned how the tea leaves were actually measured and also the correct way to put the leaves into a bag.

-        How do you feel about today’s activities?
o   Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
I think that the projects taught me how dangerous it can be if we do not follow rules and also play around in a lab since a lab contains a lot of dangerous chemicals and if we do not listen to instructions, we may accidentally mix the wrong chemicals and produce harmful gases.

o   Share your insights for the day

Today was actually really fun and I enjoyed the day a lot with my team mates. The activity was really interesting and it made me excited for the next day.

Second Day
-        What did you do today?
o   Briefly describe your day’s activities
Today we started our extraction of caffeine. After that we came together as a group and worked on our presentation slides.

-        What did you learn today?
o   Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
Today I learned how we can actually extract the caffeine and also why we do some of the steps. We also learned how to handle the equipments, how they work and also how to set up the equipments.

-        How do you feel about today’s activities?
o   Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
Whenever we handle something, we have to be careful of what we are touching and we must listen to instructions otherwise we may put ourselves or others in danger.

o   Share your insights for the day
-        What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?

Reflection Project 3A

Pre-camp
o   What sounds interesting about this project?
The fastest ball challenge sounded interesting and since it applies some of what we learned in physics and also mathematics, I thought it may be something unique.

o   What do you think you can learn from this project?
I think I can learn how we can make use of different factors to make a ball travel faster and also learn new things on physics or maybe even math that may be useful to me in the future.

o   Any immediate questions regarding the project?
Nope~

First Day
-        What did you do today?
o   Briefly describe your day’s activities
The first activity we did was the fastest ball challenge where we were given quite sometime to adjust the angle of the ramp such that the speed of the ball will be the fastest. We were also supposed to adjust the photo-gates. After that, we were given a challenge to make the ball have the same speed as the speed given by the professor. We had to make sure that we adjust the ramp and the place where the ball was released, so that the speed was the same as the given one. After that, we were given three spheres of different sizes and we were asked to choose the one that we think would reach the bottom of a tube of soap first. My team concluded that the largest one will be the fastest and we were right. After that we were given heavyweight and lightweight objects and we were required to pick two and test out which one would be the fastest.

-        What did you learn today?
o   Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
Today I learned how trigonometry can actually be used to find the angle of the ramp since we were having some trouble measuring the angle. We also learned how the shape and also the mass of objects could affect the speed of which it moves.

-        How do you feel about today’s activities?
o   Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
It also taught me how to think quick since the fastest ball challenge only allowed us a little time to meet the criteria so quick thinking is an important skill.

o   Share your insights for the day

Today was actually really fun and I enjoyed the day a lot with my team mates. The challenges made me look forward to another day doing projects.
